Charlie parker jam session12/25/2023 ![]() ![]() The place he wanted me to see, first stop, was 3219, a place he referred to as “Jack’s Basket.” I drove, he narrated-a sweet, silky solo.Ĭentral seemed wiped clean of any sentimental remnant of that former era, or so I thought. That first afternoon, in 1995, we slipped into my car and from his mid-city home in Los Angeles’s Miracle Mile district wound east, then south on surface streets toward Central. COURTESY OF THE TOM & ETHEL BRADLEY CENTER AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, NORTHRIDGE Radio host Bill Sampson (standing at left microphone) and his band often played at Jack’s for KAGH. Jack’s attracted greats like Buddy Collette, Duke Ellington, and Dexter Gordon. Buddy was set on reanimating Central Avenue for me, its history and eminence, but also its meaning. How they all “vibed.” Our initial meeting turned into many. ![]() Buddy was avid about places where musicians came to unify-to play, yes, but also to share and commiserate how they got the word around about what was going on-musically and politically. He had been a major figure in the amalgamation of L.A.’s segregated musicians’ unions, black and white, that integrated under Local 47 in 1953. And because he was a musician, his ear was tuned to sense details of time and place that gave the stories a lush, surround-sound quality. I was, as a reporter, working on a profile of Buddy, and he was always generous with his time and his stories. ![]() I popped up on his porch one afternoon 25 years ago with a notebook, a cassette recorder, and a lot of questions about the old jazz scene that had coalesced, from the 1920s into the mid-1950s, along Central Avenue-“Jazz Street,” as some of the older locals I’d grown up around called it. My path to this particular past was jazz musician and composer Buddy Collette. The caveat: just be careful how you step, or you break the spell, change the future. They were a pathway, like the device in that old Ray Bradbury story “ A Sound of Thunder” that allowed you to wander back in time to view history. I leaned hard on people’s stowed-away histories-their stray memories and their internal maps. Growing up in L.A., I learned long ago that to get back to the past, I’d have to rely on the power of story. Most likely, the proprietors of adjacent businesses and the neighbors who wheeled their metal fold-up shopping carts past it had little idea what one of its most glamorous identities had been. For decades, the storefront has been one of those addresses that have nested various small enterprises-in this case, a sewing factory, a café, a butcher, office space, a discount store. This has been, in certain respects, the case with 3219 South Central Avenue. One shortcut might reveal an inventory of off-the-beaten-path structures that have eluded developers’ desires, or tucked-away jewels lost amid a hodgepodge of architectural styles or on-the-fly renovations. Yet, for all the fast-forward erasure-razed landmarks, dramatically altered vistas, and, more recently, the hard press (and anguish) of gentrification-the city still holds a cache of rich built history. After spending six months in detox at Camarillo State Hospital, a reinvigorated Charlie Parker went to Jack’s Basket Room and gave what is considered by many to be the greatest performance of his life. ![]()

Verizon push to talk plus12/25/2023 ![]() And the significant services cost expenditure to build and maintain an LMR network presents another stumbling block. LMR’s narrowband operations also limit communications to voice only sharing large documents or videos is virtually impossible. Traditional two-way land mobile radios (LMRs) are sturdy, but they constrain communications to a fixed geography, becoming unreliable beyond a certain radius. Verizon’s transformative Push to Talk Plus service - combined with rugged smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro - provides seamless communication and collaboration between all team members, whether they’re in the field, at the office or working from home. However, considering Exynos’ history of inferior performance compared to Qualcomm’s chips, Samsung’s plan to keep the best SoC for the most expensive Galaxy S24 Ultra really wouldn’t be all that different from Apple’s “the best chip for the Pro iPhone only” strategy.Field communications are critical to operational efficiency and customer service, but the technology provided to frontline workers has often lagged behind what is available to their colleagues at corporate headquarters. Sure, it’s not quite an “Apples to Apples” comparison since Samsung’s Exynos 2400 is technically a new chip we haven’t seen before. The former stuck with Cupertino’s flagship SoC from 2021 (the A15 Bionic), while only the Pro model gained the new A16 Bionic. ![]() In case you’re wondering where Samsung got this sneaky idea from, it might help remembering that Apple pioneered this “genius” plan last year, with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. Meanwhile, the vanilla Galaxy S24 and S24+ are said to go back to the “good old days” of regional chip discrimi… I mean division - Exynos 2400 for some regions of the world, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for others. In case you haven’t heard, the latest leaks and rumors say the Galaxy S24 Ultra might be the only S24 model that uses Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagship chip exclusively. Perhaps the most obvious iPhone 15 Pro-inspired design element of the Galaxy S24 Ultra must be the titanium frame expected to debut on the most premium Galaxy flagship for the first time ever.Īpple was rumored to switch to the premium material for a while, and we finally have the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which are now supposedly more durable, and (more importantly) 20g lighter than their stainless steel-bearing predecessors. Samsung likes Apple’s idea of using titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro’s design Galaxy S24 Ultra will have a titanium frame too The surprise switch to a 5x zoom camera from the (technically more impressive) 10x zoom lens is the perfect metaphor for Samsung’s newly-found philosophy of “less is more” - which (of course) has been Apple’s own mantra since the beginning of time. How about that new 5x zoom camera in the Galaxy S24 Ultra we’re hearing about? Coincidence or not, Samsung is now expected to replace the iconic 10x optical zoom lens that’s been present in the company’s Ultra flagship for three years with a new, 5x zoom camera, similar to the 5x zoom lens from the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Galaxy S24 Ultra switch from 10x to 5x zoom might be the perfect metaphor for Samsung’s new, Apple-like philosophyīut I can get a bit more specific with the examples (because my life is phone specs). ![]()

Sparkle and co unicorn chrome12/25/2023 ![]() ![]() Always follow manufacturer’s instructions on the cure times and do not cure for longer.Ĭhrome must be applied on top of a cured layer of non-wipe top coat. If you over-cure the top coat in which the chrome is being applied onto, then the chrome will often just rub straight off and not adhere. Once you have applied your non-wipe top coat over your colour of choice, do not touch the surface – even though it is a non-tacky surface, you can transfer oils from your skin which may affect how the adheres. You can also use base coat over instead of the first layer of top coat too as some find this more effective. If you aren’t sure how well you are applying your top coat, be safe and apply two. It is paramount to ensure you cap the free edge to ensure you are encasing the chrome pigment sufficiently, otherwise the nail could be prone to chipping. Use a soft fluffy brush, such as a make-up brush to dust off any excess. This excess product can prevent a thorough cure, which can be why it chips or peels. ![]() When you begin to achieve the look you want, turn your applicator or brush to its clean side, and buff for a little while longer. If the chrome powder goes on too thick, it will leave sparkly particles. When you apply it to the nail, do so sparsely and firmly and polish it in until you achieve a shiny mirror-like effect, rather than apply it like a typical pigment or glitter. Less is more when it comes to chrome powder and a little goes a long way. Here are my top tips for some troubleshooting issues techs may experience with chrome: Try to avoid using your finger to avoid contamination and oils from your finger coming into contact with the product as well as avoiding skin contact and potential skin irritation. There are several tools you can use to apply chrome such as a disposable eyeshadow brush, makeup sponge, or a silicone tool. They are most intense in the sun under LED lighting, and the effect is weak in fluorescent lighting. Remember – chrome nails will look different depending on the lighting. There are so many effects you can achieve with chrome by using different base colours and even applying coloured glass gel over the top. Each product and brand may have slightly different instructions and application techniques, so always follow these or get in touch with the manufacturer if you aren’t sure. The chrome nail trend is ever-popular and while most nail techs have tried the technique, not every one applies the products correctly. Educator and award-winning nail technician, Katie Barnes, offers tips on making chrome pigments last on nails, should you experience issues… ![]()

Vegan gelatin benefits12/25/2023 ![]() ![]() Below are some of the most prevalent myths about vegan jello: Myth 1: Vegan Jello Is Not As Sweet Or Flavorful As Traditional Jello When it comes to vegan jello, there are several common misconceptions people have about its characteristics and nutrition facts. So the term “vegan jello” has become quite popular in recent years. More and more people are adopting a vegan lifestyle. You can buy them online or at healthy food stores such as Vitacost or Instacart. Popular brands of vegan-friendly Jel desserts include: Or you can make a healthier version of this classic treat by combining chia seeds with coconut milk, sweeteners, and flavored extracts. Pectin powder is also an excellent substitution due to its ability to congeal into a jelly-like consistency when mixed with liquid. Substitutes like agar agar flakes, pectin powder, and carrageenan (derived from red algae) are excellent in place of gelatin.Īgar agar flakes come from seaweed and are a popular vegan option for making jello. Make sure pre-packaged Jellos are clearly labeled “vegan” or “plant-based” before adding them to your shopping cart. You can also make vegan jello at home using simple ingredients such as fruit juice, agar agar powder flakes, arrowroot powder, or cornstarch as a thickener. Instead of animal collagen use cane sugar, evaporated cane juice or other vegetable sweeteners instead of regular sugar.ĭepending on the type of Jello you are buying, some of them may contain corn syrup solids or fruit pectin which can add flavor and sweetness without using animal products. These plant-based alternatives often contain gum acacia and agar-agar as gelling agents (we also use agar agar in our Tanghulu recipe to help the candid sugar crunchy). Nowadays many companies have since developed vegan versions of the popular dessert. These versions contain vegan gelatin derived from seaweed or plant starches such as tapioca and pectin instead of regular gelatin derived from animal sources. Vegetarians can also enjoy vegan versions of Jello. Luckily, there are vegan alternatives available on the market today that contain only plant-based ingredients such as modified cornstarch or agar along with natural food colorings and natural flavors without any added sugar or preservatives. Unfortunately, Jello is not vegan due to standard Jell-O products are unable to meet these qualifications. Jello also contains a number of animal-based flavorings, including honey and dairy products. Gelatin is made from an animal protein called collagen that is derived from animal parts such as skin, cartilage, and bones from bovine (cow) sources as well as pig sources. The primary ingredient in Jell-O is gelatin (also used in marshmallows and gummy bears). It contains sugar, gelatin powder, and a variety of artificial food coloring and flavoring agents. Jell-O is a dessert, typically flavored with fruit. Over time Jell-O has become one of America’s most trusted brands due to its wide availability and affordability even today. The product was then rebranded as Jell-O which quickly gained traction with consumers due to its novelty value and being inexpensive to make at home by just adding cold water to packets of powder mix. The first commercial jello-like product was called “ jelly powder” and was released by the Ferdinand Schumacher Milling Company of Akron, Ohio in 1897. Originally an expensive treat for the rich and famous, jello soon became a popular dessert in households all over the world during and after World War I. It has been commercially available since the late 1890s, gaining popularity in the early 20th century with various flavors and cookbooks created for it. Jello, jel, or jelly in British English, is a semi-solid food made from f lavored and sweetened gelatin. In this guide, we’ll explore the various elements of the jello-making process and provide expert insight into its vegan status. Thus, it is important to understand whether jello is vegan or not before making a decision about whether to include it in your diet or not. ![]() While some food items are obviously off limits - such as meat and dairy products - other seemingly innocuous items may contain animal-derived ingredients that not all vegans will be comfortable consuming. Veganism is a growing lifestyle choice, and individuals who opt to follow it must very closely consider the foods they consume.
